Springfield Police Department's own K9 Flexx proved instrumental on Tuesday in a drug bust that led to the arrest of 34-year-old Jose Valentin for cocaine trafficking. In a coordinated effort, the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit and the Hampden County Sheriff's Department conducted surveillance and a subsequent traffic stop which culminated in Valentin's capture as conveyed by a statement from Springfield Police.
Under the direction of Sergeant Jaime Bruno, the detectives, around 1:00 p.m., tracked Valentin during his vehicle's journey in the Boston Road area. A particular occurrence on Division Street incited suspicion when Valentin engaged in a suspected drug deal. Cruising through the Forest Park area, police stopped Valentin near the intersection of Sumner Avenue and Cliftwood Street that they executed.
Following the traffic stop, K9 Flexx searched Valentin's vehicle at 130 Pearl Street, indicating the presence of drugs in the front cabin. The harmonious relationship between man and animal in law enforcement operations exemplified itself when Flexx's keen senses detected the narcotics leading the officers to evidence they needed to prosecute Valentin.
The discovered illicit haul included over 12 grams of heroin, 12.8 grams of cocaine, around 13.2 grams of crack-cocaine, and $351 cash. For charges including "Trafficking in Cocaine, 18-36 Grams" and "Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug," Valentin was placed under arrest by the detectives that they pursued him.
Jose Valentin now faces serious charges with the weight of the law descending upon him. His arrest and the seizure of these drugs mark a win in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Springfield, as reported by local authorities.
