St. Louis Park has found itself a beacon of emerging leadership as Mayor Nadia Mohamed accepts the 2024 Emerging Leader Award from the League of Minnesota Cities (LMC). The award, bestowed on June 27 during the LMC's annual conference in Rochester, recognizes Mohamed’s swift rise in local politics and her impactful work within the community. Elected as the city’s mayor in 2023, she broke ground as the first Somali-American to claim a mayoral role in the United States and as the first woman of color to lead St. Louis Park. According to a press release from the city, before she assumed the role of mayor, Mohamed had already carved a path through history at just 23, becoming the youngest person to serve on the city council, as reported by the St. Louis Park, MN.
In her tenure, Mayor Mohamed has been instrumental in bridging gaps between communities, fostering an understanding of Muslim culture by initiating various programs ranging from classes to citywide conversations. Receiving the 2018 City of St. Louis Park Human Rights Award, as a council member, she worked for the betterment of relationships across different cultures. Her advocacy hasn't wavered even with the added responsibilities that come with her current office. Her persistent voice for affordable homeownership in St. Louis Park was recognized too, spearheading first-generation homeownership and down payment assistance programs.
The city council, in a joint statement included in Mohamed’s nomination form, as per the city's press release, captured her essence: “Mohamed’s heart for the community is evident in all her activities. From providing training on diversity, equity and inclusion in her daily work, to serving the community on city council, to speaking to groups for Women’s History Month and Black History Month, Mayor Mohamed shows us the best of what it means to be a public servant" St. Loius Park City Council said. "She is a role model to us all in how to be authentic, show up as your true self, and lead with care and integrity.”
The League of Minnesota Cities, a membership organization, lends its support to over 830 cities with various services such as advocacy, education and training, and collective action. Pictured at the award ceremony were League of Minnesota Cities Executive Director Luke Fischer, Mayor Nadia Mohamed herself, and the Board of Directors President Justin Miller, applauding her achievements and what bodes as a bright and transformative future in municipal governance.
