The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is extending a call to action for would-be firefighters through its newly minted Fire Cadet Program, as reported on July 25th; individuals at least 18 years old are invited to apply for this volunteer-driven pathway to firefighting, designed to bolster resumes and forge characters ready for the demanding yet rewarding field of fire service. For those looking to immerse themselves in the operational heart of firefighting, the program promises comprehensive exposure including training sessions, ride-alongs with seasoned crews, participation in community service initiatives, and mandatory quarterly meetings, which are scheduled between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on the first Monday of January, April, July, and October cadets are expected to commit a minimum of 16 hours per month to the program, a requirement that ensures not only consistent engagement with the responsibilities at hand but also a steady accretion of practical knowledge and experience.
To qualify for the Fire Cadet Program, applicants must be at least 18 years old, clear a criminal background check, and provide a sports physical or equivalent certification, alongside a valid Arizona driver's license and successful completion of an interview with SFMD staff, according to program requirements; further, securing an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification within a year of entering the program is essential for progression.
