
A 38-year-old man from Taylor, Michigan, William Gonzalez Nunez Jr., has been charged with assault with intent to murder following a shooting incident outside a Southfield bar, as per reports from CBS News Detroit. The altercation, which escalated to gunfire last Wednesday, took place in the bar's parking lot located near Evergreen and 10 Mile roads.
The confrontation between Nunez and the victim reportedly began with a verbal argument. At the same time, inside the bar, which then spiraled into a violent encounter after both parties left the premises, Nunez was seen getting into his vehicle. He left, followed shortly by the victim who got into his car. Nunez then allegedly parked on a side street exited his vehicle, ran up to the victim's car, and fired multiple shots, striking the victim in the chest, with this sequence of events captured by surveillance footage according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, as per CBS News Detroit.
According to a report by The Detroit News, Nunez now faces a series of charges including using a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon. If found guilty, the assault with intent to murder charge carries a maximum life sentence, the felony firearm charge up to two years, and the concealed weapon charge up to five years.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald expressed concerns over the rash of gun violence stating, "The prevalence of gun violence in our community, and across the state and country, is shocking and unacceptable," she emphasized the need for proactive measures, declaring that public safety remains the paramount concern and that her office is "also committed to addressing gun violence as a public health crisis and focusing on prevention to reduce the tremendous toll that gun violence takes on our community" as quoted by WWJ Newsradio.
After Nunez's arraignment, his bond was set at $200,000 cash/surety with a 10% provision, and he is awaiting a probable cause conference, scheduled for August 2nd. The victim, meanwhile was hospitalized following the incident, although details concerning the victim's current medical condition were not disclosed at the time of reporting.
