The clock is ticking for students aiming to secure their Tennessee Promise by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the August 1 cutoff. With just over a week remaining, the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) and its partners are working hard to boost the state's FAFSA completion rates during what has been officially declared "FAFSA Frenzy Month."
Despite Tennessee holding a strong record for the percentage of FAFSA completion nationwide, there's been a noticeable slump this year, with only 59.1% of Class of 2024 high school students finishing their applications—a figure trailing by about 10% from last year at the same time. Illuminated in green, landmarks throughout the state, such as the Big River Crossing Bridge in Memphis and the Nashville State Capitol Cupola, have been enlisted to remind families and students of the approaching deadline.
As Governor Bill Lee emphasized the state's commitment to its residents' educational aspirations, he said, “Whereas, Tennessee is deeply committed to supporting the aspirations of all residents and preparing the state's future workforce" highlighting the abundance of financial aid available for those seeking higher education or workforce credentials beyond high school. In his proclamation, which was marked by a celebratory tone to set the scene for a collective effort, he also noted the critical nature of the FAFSA in accessing a broad range of financial aid opportunities, as per the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
