As Americans gear up to commemorate Independence Day with traditional exuberance, the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) are stepping in with a timely reminder. With a nod to both celebration and caution, they're urging residents to balance their festive spirit with fire safety awareness. The backdrop to this advisory lies in stark figures: eight deaths and about 9,700 injuries nationwide last year due to fireworks, as per a report from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In the context of Tennessee, reports indicated that fireworks sparked 135 fires, leading to an estimated $937,649 in damage.
With the Fourth of July at our doorstep, the Tennessee State Fire Marshal, Carter Lawrence, suggests a safer way to enjoy the holiday. This includes participating in public fireworks displays handled by professionals. While talking about consumer fireworks, Lawrence stated, "If you choose to use consumer fireworks to celebrate, I ask that consumers first familiarize themselves with their local fireworks laws as some municipalities have ordinances and restrictions related to fireworks usage." In a reminder obtained by the TDCI, he further advocates adhering to safety guidelines and warnings to ensure a secure environment.
It's not just about personal safety; it's a concern that extends to everyone in the vicinity, including first responders. Interim Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention, Mary Beth Gribble, in an announcement by TDCI, highlighted the broader impact of fireworks misuse. According to her statement, using fireworks at home not only carries risks of injury or property damage to the users and bystanders but also to first responders who might be called to address the aftermath of reckless behavior with fireworks.
As Tennesseans celebrate their nation's independence, they are encouraged to bear in mind that health can be the real price to pay when festivities go awry. So before lighting up the sky, think twice about the potentially lasting consequences fireworks could have, and consider opting for a professional display instead.
