Chaos briefly erupted along Wolf River Boulevard in Germantown yesterday afternoon when shots were fired near an ongoing traffic stop. The Germantown Police Department informed the public that a man and a minor are now in custody relating to the incident. According to Action News 5, the disruption took place around 1:40 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement present at the scene.
The quick apprehension of the suspects involved saw one individual taken into custody by the officer who heard the gunfire and another was reportedly caught within The Bridges Apartments complex not long after. While concluding a traffic stop, the gunfire was heard by an officer, which, fortunately, did not result in any injuries, as reported by Local Memphis.
Residents of The Bridges at Germantown were surprised to find their community swiftly transformed into a crime scene spanning half a mile. The Germantown Police blanketed the area with a heavy police presence, including a field and walking trail nearby, and even a medical office up the road. K-9 units were also observed participating in the search. A resident's camera captured one of the arrest that saw an officer in tactical gear and another uniformed officer restraining the suspect. "You wouldn't expect to see something that crazy literally from the comfort of your home," resident Malik Taylor told FOX13 Memphis in an interview.
Taylor further expressed a mixture of shock and resignation, commenting, “You move to a quiet part of town and for what you are paying, you expect it to be just that." He went on to reflect, “It shows you that crime unfortunately is everywhere. It’s just sad. It is sad.” Despite the gravity and potential danger posed by the gunfire, neighbors breathed a collective sigh of relief as the situation concluded without any loss of life. As the investigation unfolds, Germantown police have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
