Fort Lauderdale drivers, prepare for detours and delays. According to the City of Fort Lauderdale’s latest announcement, there will be significant closures on Broward Boulevard coming up next weekend. The stretch at the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) crossing, just west of Andrews Avenue will be entirely off-limits to traffic from 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 3 until midnight, Tuesday, August 6, to allow for maintenance works on the railroad crossing.

The necessary repairs will see workers rehabilitate the existing track, repairing defective rails, and replacing the crossing surface to, "improve ride quality." During this period, drivers are advised to use the primary detour which will direct traffic to Sunrise Boulevard to the north, and Davie Boulevard to the south. A local detour route is also available for those familiar with the area. Variable message signs have been deployed to inform motorists of the upcoming disruption.

This closure is but one of several along the FEC crossing in the coming weeks. Further information provided by the city indicates additional stretches will be shut down for similar repairs. SW 2nd Street will close from 6 p.m. today to midnight August 2. Subsequently, SW 9th Street will follow suite from 6 p.m. August 5 to midnight August 7, then SW 15th Street from 6 p.m. August 7 to midnight August 9, finally SW 17th Street from August 11 to August 13.

Residents and travelers in the area are encouraged to plan their itineraries accordingly and allow extra time for travel. The detours could significantly affect travel times, especially during peak hours. The inconvenience, although temporary, is part of an overarching effort to ensure safer, and smoother transportation networks across the city. For more detailed detour routes, maps can be found on the city’s website.
