As the Pioneer Fire continues to rage in Chelan County, urgent evacuation orders have been pressed upon the Stehekin community. Chelan County Emergency Management has mandated a Level 3 evacuation, signaling residents to "Leave now," for areas stretching from just north of Moore Point through Stehekin Valley to High Bridge, according to KIRO7.
Resilience in the face of approaching flames is embodied by the community, as locals prepared their homes against the encroaching danger. One resident, Chelsea Courtney, recalled the poignant moment when a large tree fell, obstructing the road temporarily, as a stark reminder of the wildfire's threat. "There's been a lot of coming together for the community, a lot of involvement in the fire meetings and then just neighbors helping each other out, communicating, emailing, everyone's got each other's backs because we know we have to," Courtney told KING5. Amidst the commotion, normalcy is disrupted with the closure of the local post office, though mail services persist dockside for residents to retrieve their correspondence.
Efforts to fortify Stehekin against the blaze were fortified by a fireline, as crews tirelessly improved defenses along the lakeshore and removed potentially hazardous material from vulnerable regions. The persistent threat, however, lies predominantly in the fire's northwest corner, with some containment success along the eastern edge and non-activity in the Lone Fir drainage, according to updates shared by KOMO News.
