His mother, Latoya Mills, shared with WPTV, "A true leader, heart of gold," and "The definition of positive." The community wore green in a show of solidarity and remembrance, as green was the color representing Smith's team.
Delani Smith, who was on a scholarship at Graceland University studying psychology, is remembered for his disciplined lifestyle and his dedication to sports. According to his former lacrosse coach, Scot Haynes, “He never drank, smoked, or did drugs. He wouldn’t even take stimulants for pre-workouts." Haynes described Smith as a vibrant and motivated individual, even though he was "100 pounds overweight." He was remembered as the enthusiastic heart of the team by both his football and lacrosse teammates.
The sudden death of Smith draws attention to the risks young athletes face, with sudden cardiac arrest being an under-recognized threat, particularly among black athletes. Family friend and local nurse Judy-Ann Wellington voiced her concerns in a statement obtained by CBS 12, "There are a lot of young athletes going into cardiac arrest, and we need to figure out why."
