The discovery of homemade explosive devices in Worcester has prompted warnings from local authorities. According to NBC Boston, three devices were found, with one detonating on Madison Street on June 19, 2024. The Worcester District Attorney's Office has made a public call for vigilance, asking residents to report unattended coolers or other suspicious objects and emphasizing the danger these improvised explosives pose.
Found with projectile materials, the first device exploded along with fireworks and a butane gas can; it initiated a broader investigation. WHDH News reported that two more devices constructed from similar materials were placed inside coolers, but were located before they could be detonated.
Residents have been warned not to interact with these dangerous items. "Massachusetts residents have caused themselves grievous injuries while attempting to create homemade explosive devices," State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine said in a statement obtained by NBC Boston. "These devices are illegal and potentially fatal." The ongoing investigation seeks to prevent any further such incidents and find those responsible.
The district attorney's statement, urging residents to be cautious, was also echoed by the fire marshal. All suspicious sightings are to be reported to authorities by calling 911, and community members should not attempt to handle these devices themselves, as reported by WDHD News.
