
A man has been detained by the Yarmouth Police Department following a harrowing episode at a local soccer game, where he is alleged to have attempted a sexual assault on a 5-year-old child, as reported by NBC Boston. The incident occurred on Tuesday at Peter Homer Park, with the authorities responding to the scene shortly before 8 pm after receiving urgent calls.
According to The Boston Herald, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Ryan Evans of Dennis, was spotted fleeing the crime scene on an electric bicycle. This marked the start of a nearly 24-hour manhunt leading up to Evans's capture on Wednesday afternoon. The man now faces multiple charges including assault with intent to rape a child, kidnapping of a child and, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Evans's criminal history includes a previous 2021 charge for assault with intent to rape a child, among other offenses.
Details provided by the Yarmouth Police outlined the perpetrator's approach, reportedly luring the young child behind the park's restrooms. The child, however, screamed which led to Evans reportedly abandoning his attempt and fleeing the area. Police presence at the park increased, involving plain-clothed officers, bicycle patrol units, and additional resources to enhance safety and ultimately locate Evans.
Evans was apprehended following a vehicle stop conducted by the police, as confirmed by the Yarmouth Police via social media. The venue of the stop has not been disclosed. Yarmouth Police, in their social media update, acknowledged that they are familiar with Evans and "had dealings with him in the past". The close call incident prompting a swift community and law enforcement response showcases the unyielding vigilance required to keep potential threats from turning into irreversible tragedies.
