A tragic boating incident claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy on Tuesday, between Drummond and Howard Islands in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, according to multiple reports. CBS News Detroit and other local news outlets have covered the developing story.

Chippewa County Sheriff's Office reports that the incident occurred at approximately 8:31 a.m., when the boy fell from the boat and was subsequently hit and entangled in the propeller. "The female operator of the boat quickly disengaged the motor and jumped into the water to assist. The boat operator was able to flag down a fisherman passing by for assistance," the sheriff's office said in a statement obtained by upnorthlive.

The boy was removed from the water and transported to Drummond Island, where he was handed over to emergency medical services. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene, with local fire and rescue, EMS, Central Dispatch, and the Chippewa County Victim Services Unit all providing assistance at various stages in the immediate response.

Investigations into the accident are ongoing, and the boy’s identity has been withheld at this time. MLive noted that further information might be released following the conclusion of the investigation.
