The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced significant daytime closures on State Route 89A due to ongoing rockfall mitigation work, with the thoroughfare shut down between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday, August 19, to Friday, August 23. According to the announcement, this affects a 3-mile section of the road south of the Oak Creek Vista.
The scheduled work is part of a safety effort to stabilize unstable cliff sections in response to a rockslide that occurred in March 2023. Travelers between Sedona and Flagstaff will need to use Interstate 17 and SR 179 during this period. Note that earlier plans for limited morning closures on Thursday and Friday were canceled, but single-lane alternating traffic with temporary signals has been in effect.
On top of the logistical changes, regular users of the route should expect intermittent delays while ADOT and its contractors address the geological risks along SR 89A. Vehicles wider than 10 feet will need to find an alternate route, as strict restrictions are in place within the active work zone. These closures are part of ADOT’s broader efforts to ensure the safety and stability of this challenging corridor.
In addition to the travel disruptions, ADOT has confirmed close coordination with local and regional safety agencies to ensure emergency services remain accessible during the closures.
