In the early hours of Sunday morning, the normally tranquil streets of Athens were disrupted by gunfire. A 911 call reported that 26-year-old Marquavious Sims was brandishing a machine gun at a Verizon store on Lexington Road. This led to a deadly chase and confrontation with Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers. Fox 5 footage captures the ensuing chaos outside a QuikTrip gas station where the shooting took place.
On arrival, ACCPD officers pursued Sims to the QuikTrip where the situation escalated. According to The Red & Black, officers demanded Sims to relinquish his firearm, after which Sims fired upon them. The officers reciprocated, striking Sims multiple times,, and although they attempted to provide emergency medical care, Sims succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. A witness recounted to FOX 5 the chaos saying, "All of a sudden I heard a whole bunch of gunshots, it sounded like the Fourth of July"
Local community members have expressed shock and grief over the incident. One local business owner, who requested anonymity, told FOX 5 about hearing the gunshots and finding a "Black man lying on the ground covered in blood." Another regular at the gas station conveyed to FOX 5 her disbelief and sympathy, saying, "It was a surprise to me when I heard it … I’m like, wow, you know, so I just say I feel sorry for the family that just lost their loved one."
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is now leading an independent inquiry into the shooting. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave as per standard protocol. An autopsy is to be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, which will then be reviewed by the Clarke County District Attorney's Office., as stated by The Red & Black. The investigation is ongoing, and more details will emerge as the case unfolds.
