An Atlanta father was shot multiple times while he was aiding his daughter's exit from an abusive relationship, a grim scenario that unfolded on West Lake Drive just before the strike of 10 p.m. Saturday. WSB-TV reports the victim was in the midst of removing his daughter's belongings from a residence she previously shared with the alleged assailant.
Upon returning to collect the remainder of his daughter's items, the father encountered David Wilkinson. The confrontation ended with Wilkinson allegedly opening fire on the father. Responding to a call near 9:47 p.m., Atlanta police discovered the victim critically injured. The suspect was reportedly still on the scene when authorities arrived, leading to his prompt arrest, according to Atlanta officials.
Wilkinson, hailing from Fairburn, stands charged with three counts of aggravated assault, alongside cruelty to children in the third degree and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies. However, FOX 5 Atlanta clarifies that the police did not confirm if Wilkinson was indeed the boyfriend involved in the aforementioned abusive relationship.
Charges against Wilkinson, who had been apprehended at the home where the shooting occurred, are pending as the investigation continues. Although the exact dynamics of the relationship between Wilkinson and the victim's daughter are still to be detailed by the authorities, the underlying narrative speaks to a tragic interplay of domestic turbulence spilling over into palpable violence.
