Part of 8th Street NE is set for a road closure next Monday. The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) is carving out a no-go zone on 8th Street NE between Taft Avenue NE and Charles Allen Drive NE, slated to seal off from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on August 5. A full road closure is needed to give space for tree removal efforts; a necessary interruption for the sake of urban greenery maintenance.
Pedestrians will also need to tweak their travel plans. The sidewalk hugging the south side of 8th Street NE won't be welcoming foot traffic, although, the pathway on the north remains navigable. In a bid to alleviate the slight chaos that comes with such interruptions, detours will dot the surrounding streets, giving travelers a way around the blockade.
The detours, confirmed by the ATLDOT advisory, offer alternative paths: for those headed eastbound on 8th St NE, swerve left onto Taft Ave NE followed by a right onto 9th St NE. If you're coming from Charles Allen Dr NE, seeking a northbound route, you'll be turning left onto 9th St NE and then hanging another left onto Argonne Ave NE. Southbound voyagers on Charles Allen Drive NE should plan to take a right onto 7th St NE, before a subsequent right onto Durant Pl NE.
