In an unexpected pivot, Smoque Steakhouse, the Avondale eatery known for its laidback steakhouse vibe, is set to evolve into a specialty venue for various events. According to Block Club Chicago, the transformation from a traditional steakhouse to what will be known as Brickton Hall, a boutique events venue, is slated for September.
After more than a year since its opening in May 2023, Smoque Steak, located at 3310 N. Elston Ave., will serve its final dinner this coming Sunday. The owners, who also run the established Smoque BBQ at 3800 N. Pulaski Road, cited that the shifts in the economy and industry during the pandemic made it clear that Smoque Steak “is a product, a brand, and an experience that is much better suited for special occasions than for everyday dinners," as detailed by Block Club Chicago.
Brickton Hall aims to cater to a range of events including weddings and corporate gatherings, with a menu featuring select items that were popular at Smoque Steak, in addition to new offerings. Furthermore, the steakhouse is initiating a catering service named Smoque Steak Events and Catering, expanding its culinary reach beyond the dine-in model. This move ensures their barbecue roots—Smoque BBQ has endured as a neighborhood joint since 2006—continue to flourish while adapting newer models of service, as reported by Eater Chicago.
In a statement that resonated with appreciation, the owners expressed, "It has been our honor and privilege to serve you at Smoque Steak." They conveyed their eagerness to continue hosting patrons' special occasions, whether "at our place or yours." For guests aiming to catch one last dining experience before the change, Smoque Steak will be open from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, and 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and again from 5-9 p.m. on Sunday, as per Block Club Chicago.
