The Cadillac Palace Theatre is currently the home of the time-hopping "Back to the Future" musical, which is delivering a nostalgia-fueled ride to theatergoers. The stage adaptation of the beloved 1985 film brings Marty McFly's inadvertent trip to 1955 to life as he scrambles to ensure his parents' fateful romance blossoms, safeguarding his own existence in the process.
Don Stevenson, a seasoned Broadway actor, steps into the iconic role of Doc Brown, originally immortalized by Christopher Lloyd. According to CBS News Chicago, Stevenson recalls being deeply impacted by the film during his college years, praising the story for its blend of genres and the palpable heart at its core. "It's got the perfect combination of a little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of action, a little bit of romance, and then it has heart," Stevenson said.
However, not all reviews are as glowing regarding the stage show's execution. The Chicago Tribune critique outlines a musical that misses the mark, prioritizing "retro digital gimmickry over the heart and soul" that defined the original film. The review acknowledges that while the musical offers its share of entertainment, suitable for families and fans of the movie, it constitutes a "missed opportunity to make something beautifully theatrical."
"Back to the Future" musical is set to continue delighting or perhaps disappointing audiences, depending on one's expectations, at the Cadillac Palace Theatre through September 1, as per CBS News Chicago.
