In a turn of events that brings an end to a nearly eight-year-old case, Richard Dale Harden, a Bartow County man, has pled guilty to the murder of Heather McDonald, a mother of three who disappeared in 2016. Harden will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
McDonald's vanishing shook the Cartersville community, where her vehicle was found abandoned at a Bartow County motel parking lot. Along with her Jeep, her personal belongings were discovered, but Heather was nowhere to be found. Extensive search efforts continued for weeks, until in a grim culmination of events, hunters stumbled upon her remains in the woods of Haralson County, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Initially sought for a separate crime, Harden's connection to the murder surfaced following a standoff with the authorities. According to WSB-TV, during the confrontation Harden made statements implicating himself in "that missing girl" case.
Investigations into Harden's whereabouts at the time of McDonald's disappearance showed his cell phone pinging in the Haralson County area where her body had been found, strengthening the link between him and the crime. This evidence, along with a woman’s sock found in his truck, and DNA samples from under McDonald's fingernails that matched Harden’s, were pivotal in charging him with murder. Erle Newton, District Attorney, told FOX 5 Atlanta, "It took some time for the forensic evidence to come to light from her remains, as well as the geolocation evidence from Mr. Harden's cell phone. All of that painted a more clear picture that he was very much involved and was responsible for her death."
In a statement obtained by WSB-TV, District Attorney Erle J. Newton III expressed relief that "McDonald's disappearance and murder are a dark tragedy. Justice in this case has been long-awaited, but the District Attorney's Office hopes that Harden's conviction and sentence provide some peace and resolution to the victims affected by his actions." Harden also made a shocking admission during questioning, stating that he had strangled McDonald and disposed of her body after a dispute over drugs and sex. Text messages from Harden's phone indicated that their communication ceased the day McDonald went missing.
