Caltrain has launched its new electric trains, marking the transition from diesel and introducing many improvements for Bay Area commuters. The VIP tour of the new fleet took place on Thursday. It was well-attended by an ensemble of federal, state, and local officials who have been advocates of the transformative Caltrain Electrification Project, according to Caltrain's official news release. The public can anticipate taking their first regular ride on these trains today, just ahead of the full-service beginning on September 21.
Sharing in the enthusiasm, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his support at the event, which also celebrated the recent appointment of Ian Choudri as the new CEO of California High-Speed Rail Authority. Speaking at the event, Newsom said, "High-speed rail linked to an electrified Caltrain will not just get Californians where they’re going faster, it’s connecting communities and driving economic growth." As part of this, the governor's office announced the high-speed rail project has seen significant developments over the last year, including securing historical funding, completing all necessary environmental reviews for the stretch between Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and initiating the selection process for trainsets.
Caltrain's electric trains are expected to improve travel time, with express trains running between San Francisco and San Jose in under an hour, and amplify service frequency, with some stations seeing peak hour service every 15-20 minutes. The project aims to bolster regional climate action goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions substantially, the equivalent of removing 55,000 cars from the roads yearly, as Caltrain reported.
It's not just the environment that benefits; Caltrain highlights the social impacts of the transition, too. By increasing access and service for equity-priority communities by 26%, electric trains are set to advance equity along the corridor by mitigating noise and air pollution. The move also garnered praise for its economic fingerprint, creating over 30,000 jobs across 36 states, underscoring a commitment to job creation and ecological sustainability.
Enhancements don’t stop there, as riders can now access improved features such as onboard Wi-Fi, digital displays, power outlets, and baby-changing tables in restrooms. "Today is the day we’ve dreamed about and worked so hard to make a reality ….. a 21st century electrified Caltrain that will travel faster, cleaner and quieter for the people of our region,” "Congressmember Anna Eshoo told Caltrain. The electric fleet invites Bay Area residents to enjoy a comfortable and emission-free ride, consistent with California’s climate goals and resourceful innovation.
