Commuters in Boston experienced significant delays Thursday evening due to a car fire that engulfed a vehicle in the O'Neill Tunnel along I-93 southbound. The flames, which were captured on surveillance, forced a brief shutdown of this bustling artery at the peak of rush hour, as reported by NBC Boston. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation swiftly intervened, shutting down traffic at Exit 16B, only to reopen the highway approximately 50 minutes later after containing the situation.
This isn't the first time this week that Boston's traffic has been disrupted by a vehicle fire. Earlier, a white SUV caught fire at Exit 16A, causing a temporary closure and frustrating drivers. The authorities haven’t yet reported if there were any injuries from the latest incident.
WHDH reports that emergency crews quickly responded to the fire, working to put it out and minimize traffic delays. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The frequent occurrence of these incidents in a short period raises concerns about safety and vehicle conditions at this location.
