Last week, a routine traffic stop in Brentwood led to a more serious encounter when police discovered two loaded guns in a vehicle with expired registration. According to the City of Brentwood Police Department, the stop occurred on Lone Tree Way, close to Highway 4, involving a car carrying three individuals with a history of felony convictions and a juvenile, all from Oakland.
The Brentwood officer who initiated the stop engaged the driver and the passengers, quickly ascertaining their legal status. John Shurn, a 44-year-old adult passenger, was on felony probation from Alameda County, as were Kenny Hampton, 42, and a juvenile passenger. The juvenile passenger disclosed the presence of the firearms, leading to the recovery of the weapons by the officer involved.
All three individuals were taken into custody without incident. The adult suspects, Shurn and Hampton, both of whom have prior felony convictions, were arrested for possession of firearms and other related charges, resulting in their transportation to the Martinez Detention Facility. The juvenile was transported to Juvenile Hall, facing charges in the juvenile justice system.
