In a significant shift for educational infrastructure in Salt Lake Valley, the Canyons School District has announced the acquisition of the eBay headquarters, which is to be repurposed into a new technical education high school. The sprawling 36-acre campus in Draper, along with a 215,000 square-foot building, and an additional 16 acres ripe for development, signals a bold move towards innovative learning spaces aimed at preparing students for the modern workforce. As Fox13 reports, the curriculum will focus on training students in fields such as robotics, engineering, business, and medicine.
The economic savvy behind this move was highlighted by Canyons Board of Education President Amber Shill, who posited that retrofitting existing structures presents a substantial cost-saving measure over new construction, citing savings in taxpayer dollars, and the potential to inspire similar initiatives nationwide. The eBay building's purchase price at $230 per square foot stands in sharp contrast to the $500 per square foot typically spent on new building projects in Utah, as per ABC4. Leon Wilcox, Canyons District Business Administrator, outlined the cost benefits of the purchase compared to renovating the present Canyons Technical Education Center structures.
Focused on replacing the current Canyons Technical Education Center which sprawls over 65,000 square feet and is housed in five separate, aging buildings, the new technical school represents a leap forward. Not only does the district contend with spatial limitations on a seven-acre site, but a study indicated a renovation of the existing facilities would be less economical than rebuilding. Upon approval of the sale, eBay issued a congratulatory statement expressing delight that their former Draper campus would transform into a beacon of education particularly for futurist tech leadership, as per KSL. The company reaffirmed its commitment to Salt Lake City and is reassessing local options for its ongoing operations.
