A significant 15-year federal prison sentence has been handed down to David Johnson, the man responsible for a brazen carjacking in an Orland Park, Illinois neighborhood and subsequent shootout with law enforcement. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois, Johnson confronted his victim on February 12, 2021, while the individual was seated in their car. Brandishing a weapon and demanding the vehicle's keys, Johnson took off, initiating a high-speed pursuit that culminated in a crash in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood.
Following the crash, Johnson didn't cease his escape attempts; in a reckless act reflecting the intensity of the incident, he fired shots at an Oak Forest police officer in hot pursuit on foot. The Chicago Police Department apprehended Johnson shortly after. At the time of the carjacking, this 27-year-old Chicago resident was already under court supervision following a stint in prison for a former federal firearm conviction.
Earlier this year, Johnson pled guilty to the federal charges of carjacking and firearm offenses. U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin issued the 15-year ruling on Thursday, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of Illinois. Assistance from the Oak Forest and Orland Park Police Departments, along with the CPD, was instrumental in the case's resolution.
The judgment reflects the gravity of the offenses and stands as a stark testament to the justice system's stance on such acts of violence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elie Zenner, who represented the government, was present for during the sentencing in federal court.
