In a recent turn of events in Casa Grande, an 18-year-old has been taken into custody following a fatal shooting incident. The Casa Grande Police Department, as per a statement on their Facebook page, confirmed the arrest of Damone Allen Purnell in connection to the shooting that took place on the evening of August 2. The victim, identified as 18-year-old Michael Morgan, suffered a gunshot wound to the head at an apartment located at the juncture of Trekell and Rodeo Roads.
Upon responding to the call, officers found Morgan with severe injuries as bystanders tried providing first aid to him. "Upon their arrival, officers discovered Michael Morgan suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Bystanders were attempting to provide first aid to Michael. Officers took over aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to a Phoenix area hospital," read the statement. Tragically, Morgan succumbed to his injuries on the night of August 4.
Further investigation by the authorities revealed that the shooting was accidental, stemming from mishandling of the weapon and horseplay between Purnell and Morgan, who were known to be close friends. Purnell now faces charges of second-degree murder and has been booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center.
According to additional details provided by azfamily.com, Purnell, and Morgan were "horsing around" with a stolen handgun before the incident unfolded. After the shooting, Purnell fled the scene and was later apprehended in a neighborhood three miles south of where the tragic event took place. Charged with second-degree murder, Purnell awaits the review and further action by the Pinal County Attorney’s Office.
The loss of Michael Morgan in such circumstances stands as a reminder of the consequences of firearm mishandling, especially among the youth. As the community seeks answers and justice, this incident highlights the imperative of gun safety and responsible ownership in preventing future tragedies.
