Casa Grande residents experienced a disruption of their usual Sunday routines when an unexpected water outage impacted approximately 4,000 customers in the city. According to ABC15, a scheduled shutdown on Saturday night did not play out as planned due to monsoon storms in the area, leading to this inconvenience that affected areas north of Kortsen Road.
Further details revealed by 12News indicate that the outage occurred after a booster station on the northeast portion of the water system was compromised which left residents with diminished water pressure or no service at all. This left the affected community members relying on bottled water and neighborly check-ins to navigate the day without one of life's most essential resources. Audrey Lopez, a resident of Casa Grande, shared her experience, stating, "A slow stream to a drip to absolutely no water," quoted 12News.
Arizona Water Company moved quickly to address the crisis. The company's Vice President of Operations Mark Kieren explained that the monsoon activity caused delays in planned system upgrades and subsequent damage that led to the outage. "It took all of our booster stations out that supply water to the northern part of our system," Kieren explained, as detailed by 12News. But by early afternoon, the booster stations were reported to be back online, and service was gradually being restored.
The impact was felt deeply in the community as residents like Carol Hirst found themselves without a basic utility they had always taken for granted. "The neighbors all started calling each other like, 'Do you have water?' No. 'Do you have water?' No," Hirst discusses the sudden disappearance of something as omnipresent as water. Casa Grande Fire Department's David Kean suggested that the booster station might have shorted out or was possibly struck by lightning, demonstrating the vulnerability of even our most steadfast utilities to the whims of nature. Repairs were completed and water service was back in operation by 1 p.m. on Sunday, according to Arizona Water Company statements.
