Charlotte County is on the lookout for residents willing to lend their expertise and voice to a myriad of advisory boards covering areas from fire service to street and drainage concerns. For locals invested in the well-being of their community, this call for volunteers represents a tangible opportunity to help shape the infrastructure and safety services in their area.
Among these civic roles is a vacancy in the Barrier Island Fire Service Municipal Service Benefit Unit Advisory Board, where residents of Charlotte County within the unit can apply to influence decisions until October 31, 2025. Detailed information and applications can be obtained by reaching out to the Public Safety Department, or by getting in contact with Todd Dunn at [email protected], as reported by the official Charlotte County website.
Another sector seeking involvement is the Construction Industry Licensing Board, requiring a volunteer to fulfill the role of a consumer advocate. With the stipulation that the applicant must have been a Charlotte County resident for no less than two years and be without financial ties to the building trades, the chosen participant will serve until July 26, 2026. Diane Whidden can provide applications for interested parties and can be contacted at [email protected].
Transportation in Charlotte County also needs resident input, with the Metropolitan Planning Organization's Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee and Citizens’ Advisory Committee both seeking one South County representative. Participation in these committees is a chance to critically review and proffer recommendations on transportation plans that will eventually be deliberated upon by the MPO board. The Charlotte County Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board further seeks to bolster its contingent with two volunteers, one hailing from the private transportation industry and another a citizens’ advocate. Details for applications are available on the MPO's site or directly through the MPO's contact details at [email protected].
Engagement in public service extends to more specified areas as well, with multiple Municipal Service Benefit Unit/Utility Advisory Boards seeking volunteers—who must both own property and reside within their respective units—to help guide decisions on local infrastructure. From the Boca Grande Street & Drainage Unit to the Rotonda Sands Street & Drainage Unit, there's an array of positions available with terms extending to 2027. Those interested in these positions can submit their applications to the Public Works Department. More information can be accessed by calling 941-575-3600 or emailing [email protected].
The deadline for submitting applications for these civic roles is set for October 5, with the appointment decision occurring at the MPO board meeting scheduled for October 21.
