In a season kick-off that no team wants to experience, the Cincinnati Bengals have confirmed that defensive end Cam Sample will be sidelined for the entirety of the 2024 campaign due to an Achilles injury. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor shared the unfortunate prognosis on Monday, detailing that Sample's significant injury occurred last Thursday during practice and resulted in him being carted off the field, as reported by WLWT.
A fourth-year player from Tulane, Cam Sample's absence leaves a notable gap in the Bengals' defensive lineup. Having appeared in 17 games last season and credited with 1.5 sacks and 29 total tackles, Sample's contributions weren't easily overlooked. "Cam's been a huge part of our team," Taylor said in a press conference, as noted by ESPN. "Played a lot of different roles. Been awesome in the locker room. We'll obviously support him during his recovery. [We] plan on him being around."
As if the injury to Sample wasn't enough, the Bengals are dealing with health concerns on other fronts, with defensive ends Trey Hendrickson vying with a bruised chest and Sam Hubbard limping from a hyperextended left knee. Hendrickson and Hubbard's conditions are currently evaluated on a week-by-week basis, further challenging the team's depth as they approach the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Paycor Stadium.
This setback couldn't have come worse for Sample, who was entering a contract year hoping to demonstrate his value before hitting free agency for the first time. According to Cincy Jungle, the torn Achilles injury not only removes him from the Cincinnati paint this season but also hobbles his position in upcoming contract negotiations.
