When Indianapolis Colts cornerback JuJu Brents took to the field for a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month, no one could have predicted the bizarre injury that would take place. The second-year player found himself on the receiving end of a play so unusual, even the seasoned pros might pause and shake their heads. A rogue cleat from an opponent managed to work its way under Brents' helmet and squarely at the bridge of his nose. This wasn't just a tackle gone wrong; it was the kind of fluke that prompts double-takes when watching the replay.
But despite what sounds like a script from a slapstick sports movie, Brents is brushing off the injury with a smirk. He initially thought it was his visor that smacked him in the face during the impact, not someone's foot. "It was weird," Brents said in a statement obtained by Stillwater News Press, "t looked like just (my) visor hit my face. It was a hard impact. But actually it looked like on that play (a) freak accident. Dude’s foot kind of just went underneath my helmet and just kicked me right in my face."
The injury, which occurred during the first quarter, led to a broken nose for Brents. He is on track for the Colts' opener, an impressive feat considering he realized the severity of the injury only after seeing his misaligned nose in a mirror on the sidelines, as reported by CBS4 Indy.
Brent's commitment to rigorous training and preparation has enabled him to recover quickly, minimizing the impact of a stray cleat on his playing time "It’s the mantra of virtually every NFL player," as noted in an article by FOX59.
