A tragic incident unfolded at Hagg Lake early last night when a 32-year-old Cornelius man lost his life after jumping off the pier. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that Vielman Mijail De La Cruz-Lopez was seen struggling to swim after he surfaced and subsequently went underwater again, KOIN reported.

The search for De La Cruz-Lopez began around 7:10 p.m., and although the water temperature was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which was noted by KPTV, he was not found during the initial search efforts. It wasn't until approximately 9:30 p.m. that the recovery team located his body.

A coordinated effort by multiple agencies, including American Medical Response, Forest Grove Fire Department, Gaston Fire Department, Hillsboro Police Department, Lake Oswego Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Lake Oswego Fire Department Dive Team, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Water Rescue Team, Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Washington County Parks was involved in the search and recovery operations, according to KGW.
