A multi-vehicle collision in Nanakuli resulted in the critical injury of one man and minor injuries among other individuals involved, officials from the Honolulu Police Department, the Honolulu Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services reported Sunday. The incident occurred just after 6 a.m. on Farrington Highway, and Honolulu Police Department continues to investigate the contributing factors, which currently include excessive speed, as reported by KITV.

The chaotic scene unfolded west of Nanakuli Avenue when a 25-year-old male driver collided with an 18-year-old male stopped at a traffic light. The impact caused the younger man's vehicle to spin out and engage another car, occupied by a 70-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman, according to Hawaii News Now. Simultaneously, the vehicle of the 18-year-old was plunged forward into oncoming traffic, striking an additional car driven by a 52-year-old woman, who was accompanied by a 56-year-old male passenger.

Honolulu Police Department crews who responded to the alert at approximately 6:09 a.m. found one person trapped. After stabilizing the wreckage, they utilized hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the victim, as noted by KITV. Emergency Medical Services personnel took over care at 6:26 a.m., transferring the critically injured 25-year-old to the hospital. Unfortunately, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The remaining individuals implicated in the accident sustained lesser injuries. The 18-year-old suffered minor injuries yet remained at the scene, while the 70-year-old and his passenger appeared unharmed. The 52-year-old driver and her passenger sustained minor injuries as well. Following the emergency response, responsibility was turned over to Honolulu Police Department, who has not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were additional factors. Incident investigations are active and ongoing.
