A representative from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that Tyrel Lorenz, a detective with the Crossville Police Department, was indicted on an assault charge. The investigation, beginning on June 3, involved an allegation that Lorenz had assaulted a man after conducting a criminal interview. According to the WVLT report, the encounter led to the man being hospitalized and subsequently released.
Following the incident, 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway sought the expertise of the TBI to look into the matter. During the investigation, which spanned over two months, agents purportedly discovered that, during the arrest, Detective Lorenz used physical force. Shared in a release that was obtained by WATE, is where the information first came to light about the allegation.
The findings prompted the Cumberland County Grand Jury to return an indictment on August 5, formally charging Det. Tyrel Lorenz, aged 37, with one count of assault. After the indictment, Lorenz honored the judicial process by turning himself in at the Cumberland County Jail, as detailed by WKRN. He was booked and later released on his own recognizance, a legal procedure allowing his release from custody without requiring a bail payment.
Speaking on the incident, the TBI reminded the public that accusations are not equivalent to guilt. Detective Lorenz is presumed innocent until, and unless, proven guilty in a court of law. This statement was echoed across various news outlets, including the previously mentioned WATE release. The date for Lorenz's next court appearance has not yet been made public, as the case continues to unfold.
