The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has welcomed a new Colonel to its ranks. Dale Grandstaff, boasting a 26-year tenure with the agency, has been named as the overseer of TWRA's state-encompassing law enforcement efforts. His official assumption of the role took place on August 4, as stated by the recent announcement.
Grandstaff is stepping into the shoes of the outgoing Col. Darren Rider, who will be retiring at the end of August following a reputable 38-year career with the Agency. The two will work side-by-side for a month, ensuring a seamless transition. In a statement Grandstaff noted, "I am excited to start this new role with the agency," he said. "I started my career as a field officer and moved up the ranks over the past 26 years and never thought I would have this opportunity. I look forward to putting all of my experiences into helping the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency continue to provide the best outdoor recreation possible to the citizens of this state and all of those that visit."
Since November 2021, Grandstaff has served as a Boating and Law Enforcement lieutenant colonel. His career at TWRA began in 1998 as a wildlife officer tasked with overseeing Sullivan County. Following his training and graduation from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1999, he made his move to Montgomery County. He was promoted within the agency numerous times, eventually managing one of the more active districts in Tennessee as a captain.
Grandstaff's reputation as a leader extends beyond internal agency affairs. His participation in industry and community is evidenced by his roles on the University of Tennessee at Martin Academic Advisory Board for the Natural Resources program, and as the past Chairman of a Nashville Area Maritime Security Committee. His acceptance into the National Conservation Law Enforcement Leadership Academy in 2017 further solidifies his commitment to conservation and his expertise in the field. Grandstaff, a native of Smith County, also holds active memberships in several organizations including the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Tennessee Cattleman’s Association.
BIosetting the backdrop for Grandstaff's career trajectory, the retiring Col. Darren Rider has been with the TWRA since 1986, assuming the role of Colonel in March 2009. With his retirement on the horizon, Rider's career serves as a testament to the long-standing dedication found within the ranks of the TWRA.
