Last Saturday, a shooting incident at a Dallas hotel led to one fatality, prompting a police response and an ensuing investigation. According to the Dallas Police Department, a security guard at the hotel engaged with two individuals who were not supposed to be on the property. The preliminary investigation revealed that the confrontation quickly escalated into gunfire.
Michael Alexander, 33, a licensed security guard, was conducting his patrol when he encountered Cameron Birdwell, 30, and another man. After requesting the two to leave, Alexander observed that Birdwell was armed. "Birdwell drew the gun and pointed it at Alexander. The two exchanged gunfire and Birdwell was shot," reports the Dallas Police Department. Unfortunately, Birdwell later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
No other injuries were reported in the incident, which took place around 12:45 PM in the 4100 block of Preferred Place. Despite the violent exchange, it appears that bystanders and other individuals in the vicinity remained unharmed.
The case is expected to be referred to a Grand Jury. This decision to submit the case for judicial review typically indicates a step towards weighing possible charges and determining the appropriate course for legal proceedings. The Dallas Police underscored the investigation is still ongoing and currently under the designated case number 118518-2024.
