The discovery of a firearm on the grounds of the Solar Preparatory School for Boys has prompted the Dallas Independent School District to implement heightened security protocols. FOX 4 News reports that the gun was seized from a student last Friday morning after a tip-off from a fellow pupil. Said to have been recovered "quickly and safely" by school officials, the incident, fortunately, did not result in any injuries. Dallas ISD has announced that the involved student will face disciplinary action in line with the district's policies.
New security measures slated to start on Monday include the installation of advanced metal detectors for students in the sixth through eighth grades, along with backpack inspections for those in the third grade and above. The district, which already enforces a clear backpack policy, has circulated a reminder to parents emphasizing the importance of securing firearms safely at home. WFAA adds that Dallas ISD Police are overseeing the ensuing investigation.
A meeting for parents is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday in the school's auditorium, where discussion of the new security changes will take place. By enhancing protective measures and engaging with the community, the district seeks to respond proactively to recent events and deter future incidents, as per FOX 4 News.
