Violence erupted at a Kroger store in Delhi Township when a confrontation over suspected shoplifting turned physically aggressive. Delhi police reported that a 69-year-old employee was attacked on Sunday morning after she addressed a woman about improperly checking out items.
According to WCPO, Lt. Joe Macaluso stated that the employee sustained two black eyes after being punched in the face between eight to ten times. "It's pathetic. It is absolutely pathetic that somebody would turn to violence for anything," Macaluso expressed. "Certainly no one expects to be assaulted while just doing their job."
Later that day, authorities took 24-year-old Maliyah Robbins into custody. FOX19 reports that she is facing one count of robbery and one count of assault tied to this incident. Robbins had reportedly been suspected by the store of committing theft via a self-checkout kiosk, leading to the confrontation.
Court documents acquired by WLWT revealed the Delhi Township police department's fast response, resulting in Robbins's capture the same evening. The accused assailant is now faced with severe allegations as she navigates the legal consequences of her actions on a day that has left a community and a victim grappling with an all too common specter of retail violence.
