As part of the nationwide DWI enforcement efforts, a 19-year-old was apprehended by Denton Police for driving under the influence, during the early hours of the annual Saturation Saturday crackdown. The Denton PD officer noticed the suspect's vehicle speeding, clocking in at 63 mph in a 25 mph zone along W. Hickory Street, at around 1:30 a.m. When the officer engaged in the pursuit, the vehicle accelerated toward S. Carroll Boulevard, hitting a median and almost veering into the opposite traffic lane before finally stopping.
The "DWIFreeDenton" campaign took an unexpected turn when it was discovered that the young driver was not only intoxicated but also evading the police in a motor vehicle. After the dangerous high-speed chase came to an end, a firearm was discovered in the vehicle. According to the City of Denton Police Department, additional charges against the teenager could be forthcoming, due to the firearm's presence.
Despite the inherent dangers involved with drinking and driving, instances like these persist, highlighting a disconnect between the known risks and the actions of individuals behind the wheel.
