David Swanson, a 61-year-old retired teacher and landlord from South Georgia, has been handed down a 15-year prison sentence following the discovery of hidden cameras in one of his rental properties, which recorded young children during private moments. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, Swanson was sentenced by U.S. District Judge W. Louis Sands on July 31. In addition to his prison term, he will face ten years of supervised release and is mandated to register as a sex offender.

Swanson's journey through the legal system began when a tenant discovered a hidden camera in her rented home's bathroom and promptly informed the Ray City Police on March 1, 2023. Per WALB, investigators found multiple cameras concealed in the ceiling and electrical outlets, and their SD cards held images of four children aged between one and twelve years old. The authorities after inspecting Swanson's other properties failed to discover any additional recording devices.

Swanson, who previously taught in the Lowndes County School system and owned multiple rental properties, entered a plea of guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. The search at his Valdosta residence on March 3, 2023, revealed approximately 750 images and videos of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on his electronic devices. This evidence included scenes of children in bathrooms and depicted sexually explicit conduct involving minors.

U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary condemned the actions, stating, "Child predators caught secretly filming unsuspecting and innocent young children and possessing all manners of child sexual abuse material will face justice for these crimes," according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Jennifer Huerta, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI Atlanta, shared a similar sentiment to FOX 5 Atlanta, highlighting the importance of the home as a refuge for families, denouncing the violation of that trust as "unforgivable" and heinously reprehensible."

The case was thoroughly investigated by the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, the Ray City Police Department, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The prosecution was made under Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice targeting the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
