Garland's downtown makeover has earned another badge of honor, being spotlighted by D Magazine as the Best Suburban Project in their "The Best of Big D, 2024" list and by the Dallas Observer as one of the "Best DART Destinations in North Texas." The recent transformation of Downtown Garland is gaining momentum and recognition for its unique balance of historic charm and modern convenience. "With this carefully planned redesign, Garland has achieved something many Dallas suburbs haven't — implementing modern changes without losing historic integrity," reported D Magazine, per the City of Garland.

The praise for Downtown Garland's revitalization doesn't end there, earlier this year, the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers honored the city's efforts with three awards. Moreover, the Downtown Square and Streetscapes Project was recognized by the Dallas Business Journal with the Best Real Estate Deals Award in the Community Impact category. The Construction Management Association of America, also awarded the project the 2024 North Texas Project Achievement Award for Government Projects valued under $50 million, signaling a significant investment in the neighborhood's future.

The scope of the Downtown Square overhaul is impressive. Spanning 60,000 square feet, the project took two years to complete and has reshaped the area's infrastructure. The City of Garland details the use of 45 tons of structural steel, and 5 tons of concrete, along with 650 tons of stone to reconstruct 14 blocks of the streetscapes. These efforts have greatly improved both walkability and connectivity throughout the district.

But it's not just about the bones. The renovation has infused Downtown Garland with new life and amenities. With 1,300 square feet of new shade structures, over 290 new light fixtures, 400 feet of wall seating, and 100 new chairs, the enhanced square offers a welcoming outdoor space for community members and visitors alike. All this, paired with extensive landscaping that introduced 68 new trees, over 280 shrubs and plants, and more than 5,000 flowers, has colored Garland with a vibrant urban oasis, according to the City of Garland.
