A disturbing incident occurring at Shake Shack's Dupont Circle location is garnering significant attention following claims from a local man, Christian Dingus, 28, who alleges he and his male partner were the victims of a hate crime when workers at the eatery violently attacked them after witnessing the couple sharing a kiss, as reported by The Washington Post.
Based on Dingus's account, the confrontation began inside the restaurant around 6 p.m. on Saturday when an employee approached the couple during a less crowded dining period and requested they stop kissing, an interaction which prompted Dingus's partner to inquire what they had done wrong, prompting further pressure from the employee for the two men to leave, which quickly escalated once outside, turning physical according to video evidence that has made rounds on social media capturing employees in uniform engaging in a melee on the sidewalk, though the video lacks context for the moments leading up to the altercation, adding a layer of ambiguity according to the published report in WTOP.
This clash, which Dingus and his partner allege was unprovoked, also caught the attention of NBC News, with Dingus recounting how employees directed their aggression towards him after he stood up for his partner, leading to a situation where he was "continuously punching me in my head" — the ordeal purportedly ending with the help of a female customer and someone who filmed the incidents provided Dingus with video of the assault that has been circulating online.
The D.C. police department is treating the matter as a suspected hate crime and their investigation is ongoing, no formal charges have been reported at this time, while Shake Shack has not publicly responded to requests for comment; this case serves as a grim reminder of the violence that can emerge at the intersections of public declarations of love and the refusal to accept them within the community.
