A severe multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 40 has resulted in a complete shutdown of eastbound lanes in Wilson County, as confirmed by WSMV. The incident, which involved two semi-trucks among other vehicles, occurred at mile marker 237 near Lebanon, with the Lebanon Police Department first reporting the event at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday night.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken over from local authorities in investigating the crash, with hopes of reopening at least the left lane soon. As a result, of the closure, traffic is currently being rerouted at mile marker 232, an inconvenience, that drivers passing through the region have been forced to endure without any clear indication of when normalcy may resume.
Further details provided by WKRN highlight the extended period of closure expected on I-40, affecting a segment especially at mile marker 236, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Smartway Map. The Lebanon Police Department updated the public via X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — of the anticipated extended shutdown.
In an attempt to alleviate traffic issues, diverted traffic is being funneled to South Hartman Drive via Exit 236. WKRN reports that the police department announced early this morning that they intend to have the left lane reopened within the next hour, offering a slight reprieve for the morning commuters. While there is a detour, the advised exit ramp to Highway 109 is expected to handle a larger volume of traffic than usual following the incident.
As the situation continues to unfold, FOX17 urges travelers and locals alike to check back for updates. With no specific clearance time given, the aftermath of the overnight crash still poses a fluid predicament for the commuters and transportation officials tasked with managing the roadways and the consequences of such unexpected events.
