Eight individuals have been charged in a federal indictment involving an alleged drug trafficking ring in South Florida. Seven are accused of distributing cocaine, fentanyl, and oxycodone near schools, and another is facing weapons charges. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida announced the charges yesterday following a targeted effort by federal and local law enforcement.

The indictment names Michael Donaldson, 37; Leo Gilbert 35; Jamare Andre Gardner, 25; Deshun Richard James, 36; Jose Albert Ruiz, 34; Kim Whitehurst, 31; and Hasani Nesbitt, 45, as participants in the narcotics scheme. Having been arrested, Donte Ike Gosha, 37, is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Residents of Miami-Dade County, they were apprehended and made their first court appearance on July 30.

According to the official release, U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe, along with officials from the FBI, ATF, and Miami Gardens Police, highlighted the multi-agency approach taken in the operation. Under the purview of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), the investigation aimed to dismantle high-level criminal organizations. These charges are part of a broader effort to combat drug trafficking and related crimes threatening U.S. communities.

The operation relied on the expertise of the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force. Comprising federal, state, and local law enforcement, the HIDTA was established to disrupt the drug trade in the region. This collaboration has enabled a level of inter-agency cooperation essential for dealing with such a pervasive criminal challenge. Notably, Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Chattah is handling the prosecution.

All accused individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Those interested in following the proceedings can find updates and court documents related to the case on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website and the District Court for the Southern District of Florida’s online portal.
