The El Paso Police Department has teamed up with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for a crackdown on impaired driving. This partnership is part of the statewide Impaired Driving Mobilization effort from August 1 through September 30. According to a press release issued by the El Paso Police Department, the increased enforcement will run until the end of Labor Day weekend, supported by a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant. This boost in patrol aims to prevent incidents like the 519 alcohol-related crashes documented in El Paso during 2023.
With Labor Day weekend approaching, the El Paso Police are increasing their watchful eye on the city's roads. This initiative is in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's campaign to elevate law enforcement visibility during this period. An additional detail to note from last year; El Paso experienced 6 alcohol-related traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday period. However, those incidents, thankfully, did not result in any deaths or serious injuries, as per El Paso Police Department.
To curb any potential tragedies this year, the authorities are reminding the public to avoid drinking and driving. TxDOT and the El Paso Police suggest planning before alcohol consumption and insist on securing a sober ride home. Whether it's through a ride-share app, a designated driver, or public transit, the goal remains staunchly fixed on ensuring safety for all road-goers.
The stakes are starkly clear, given the previous year's statistics with 23 fatalities and 38 serious injuries stemming from drunk driving. By enhancing the law enforcement presence, the police hope to replicate the relative success of the last Labor Day holiday, which managed to avoid such grim outcomes. Through public awareness and the visibility of additional patrols, El Paso aims to keep its roads safe during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
