Chaos erupted on a Massachusetts highway when a 1,300-pound bull, en route to a slaughterhouse, broke free and triggered a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 495. The bull's dash for freedom Monday morning ended tragically after a tense confrontation with police resulted in the animal being shot. CBS Boston reported that the escaped bull belonged to Mathieu Farms and was in the process of being transported to the slaughterhouse when it became enraged and made its escape.
According to the Raynham Police, the bull managed to break through several containment measures, including electrified fences, and leap over a six-foot barrier before charging onto the highway. Police indicated the resulting accident led to a hospital visit for one of the drivers involved, who is expected to recover. As events unfolded, local residents Colleen Campbell and Alex McCarthy came across the animal standing in a horse pasture. "We were really close to them, and I was like this isn't someone's bull, this is a missing bull, and this isn't normal, and we were like we need to call the police," Campbell explained in a statement acquired by CBS Boston.
The escalated situation took a turn for the worse once the bull entered Lake Nippenicket and began swimming aggressively towards police officers and farm workers. Attempts to subdue the animal with gunfire were initially ineffective. "The shots were ineffective at stopping the animal. The bull got out of the water and began to charge at those on the shore. To avoid being injured by the charging bull, the officer fired several more frightful shots and struck the bull in the leg. This disabled the bull and prevented any further injury," stated Raynham Police Captain Peter Beatrice as quoted by CBS Boston. Due to the severity of its injuries and demonstrated aggression, the decision was made by the farm's owner to euthanize the animal.
Bodycam footage from the Raynham police captured the harrowing moments as the officer fired upon the bull. "I want to commend our brave officers who put themselves in harm's way to make sure that a bad situation did not get worse," praised Raynham Police Chief David LaPlante in a statement. According to NBC Boston, the police had been forewarned by farm owners that the bull was likely too aggressive to be captured and might require euthanasia. Despite this, the owners and staff at Mathieu Farms worked tirelessly with the responding officers throughout the ordeal.
The incident, as described by witnesses and officials, serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of such events. The farm's owner, a hunter with a legal gun, ultimately carried out the difficult task of euthanizing the wounded animal, as reported by NBC Boston. The Raynham community and the responding officers were spared further injuries or destruction, but the toll of the day's events has left a palpable impact, with the visceral conclusion of the bull's desperate run for freedom resonating as a somber footnote to the day's events.
