An escaped inmate from New Hampshire has been apprehended in South Boston, according to federal officials. Anthony Clark, 41, who fled from Concord Hospital-Laconia where he was receiving treatment, was found and arrested early Friday morning in an apartment on Logan Way. The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the arrest after Clark, initially unresponsive to surrender demands, was located without further incident, NECN reports.
Clark's escape occurred early Sunday, and he was on the loose for nearly a week. According to WCVB, he was able to free himself from an ankle monitoring device, a detail that further underscores the disconcerting reality of the oversight at the facility, an alert was triggered when the device was tampered with but, went undetected for hours. Officials later found the discarded ankle bracelet on High Street.
The capture of Clark brought a temporary end to a tense chapter for the community. The U.S. attorney's office informed that Clark, with links to New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and California, was considered a "looming threat" due to the nature of his charges, which include assault, stalking and witness intimidation. Despite the initial lack of cooperation, his arrest was completed without any harm to officers or the suspect himself.
Clark was to stand trial for domestic violence charges that paint a grim picture of repeated abuse including strangulation, simple assault, among others. The surveillance footage, which corroborated the timeline of events, showed Clark leaving the hospital premises around 1 a.m. Sunday after disabling his ankle monitor. The oversight of the tamper alert at the correctional facility marked the third such escape in two years, a concerning statistic for a community in need of reassurance and, resolve from their institutions.
Upon arrest, Clark was slapped with a charge of violating the Fugitive Felon Act and is slated to make court appearances in both Concord and federal court. The status of his legal representation is currently unknown, while the Department of Corrections and law enforcement reassess procedures to prevent further incidents. Individuals aware of the ongoing manhunt were encouraged, to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support and assistance throughout the operation, a reminder of the resources available to those affected by domestic abuse.
