County officials are gearing up to kickstart the Green Street project in Fallbrook, which is aimed squarely at boosting water quality in the area. Announced plans reveal that South Mission Road, between Grand Tradition Way and Pepper Tree Lane, will be the ground zero for these improvements. The effort is part of a larger crusade to protect watershed integrity and promote sustainable practices. Construction is set to start in late 2024, per the County Supervisors' decision, with expectations to wrap it up by summer 2025.
Delving into the project's specifics, the county will install a trash capture device beneath the street to seamlessly capture trash, sediment, and other debris. Above it, a biofiltration basin will take root, designed to mitigate bacteria and nutrients in stormwater that would otherwise deposit into the San Luis Rey River. The project's primary tool is to simultaneously enhance the landscaping while also purifying the lifeblood of our ecosystems — water. The entire endeavor is tagged with a $3 million price tag.
The Department of Public Works' Green Streets Clean Water Plan, published back in 2022, sheds light on the initiative's core objective to shield the environment and elevate water quality. South Mission Road (North Segment) was picked from an array of 30 ranked projects, the selection hinging on a balance between anticipated environmental uplift and cost-effectiveness. The County of San Diego informs that the DPW's plan is a cornerstone in the County's long-term sustainability blueprint.
Moreover, the project doesn't just aim to cleanse our waterways merely; it also strives to foster a more wholesome environment for local denizens and visitors alike, ensuring that the natural tapestry we so often take for granted can be bequeathed to our successors intact and thriving. According to the County of San Diego, this initiative is a testament to the County's commitment to protect and actively augment natural resources. The project also focuses on underserved communities, prioritizing them in its stormwater improvement strategies.
