The former police chief of Robbins, Carl Scott, has been indicted on charges including aggravated battery, official misconduct, and theft. These charges arose after a 43-year-old man, who entered the Robbins Police Station to file a complaint, claimed to have been assaulted by Scott, as reported by CBS News Chicago. The incident, which occurred on July 1, sparked an investigation by the Cook County Sheriff's Office, eventually leading to Scott's charges.
During the confrontation, the victim was allegedly recording the lobby when Scott began to film him with his cell phone. According to prosecutors, Scott called for backup and soon after attempted to cite the man for public nuisance. When the man refused to provide identification, Scott directed him to be taken to the back for fingerprinting, as The Chicago Sun-Times notes. This is when the situation purportedly escalated, with Scott knocking the man's cell phone out of his hand and allegedly subjecting him to physical violence.
The man who faced Scott's alleged attack is known on YouTube as “Tyrant Terminator Audits”, engaging in what is termed as First Amendment audits. He told CBS News Chicago that he intended to ensure the respect of constitutional rights by public officials. In his account of the incident, he feared for his life and anticipated that Scott might "beat me to death."
Scott made his initial court appearance on Friday, where he was ordered to avoid contact with the victim and witnesses and to stay away from the Robbins Police Department. His next court date is scheduled for August 29, as per CBS News Chicago.
