The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested a former Soperton Police Department officer, Kenneth Bishop, age 60, on serious charges related to an incident that occurred in late July. According to the GBI's statement, Bishop is facing three counts of aggravated assault and one count of terroristic threats and acts stemming from actions he took while on duty.
Details from the GBI's inquiry reveal that the incident transpired on July 26, and involved a vehicle that held three people, connected to an assault victim, who allegedly entered a dispute with then-officer Bishop leading to a dangerous confrontation where, the former officer drew his weapon, and while aggressively pounding on the vehicle's windows, he threatened its occupants with violence; Bishop's employment status at the time was that of a Soperton Police Officer and the case, now following his arrest raises questions about the use of force and police conduct within the community. Following the internal procedure, the Soperton Police Department approached the GBI to take over the investigation on July 31, and has since been cooperating with the bureau.
Bishop's arrest took place on August 19, with the booking conducted at the Treutlen County Jail; details of this aspect of the case were briefly noted by the GBI. The former officer's subsequent legal process is expected to unfold under the jurisdiction of the Dublin Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, upon completion of the investigation.
The GBI has stated that the investigation remains active and encourages anyone with pertinent information to come forward, information can be reported through various means including by phone, online submissions, or via a mobile application.
Further updates on the case and Bishop's prosecution will become available as the GBI proceeds with the investigation and hands over its findings to the District Attorney's Office; those interested in following the case are advised to keep an eye on public records and announcements from official channels.
