On August 7, the Fremont Police Department responded to an alleged shooting in the area of Isherwood Way and Chaplin Drive at approximately 7:30 p.m. A local resident reported being shot at following what was described as a brief argument with a male suspect, who was then seen fleeing into an adjacent homeless encampment. The victim, who remained unscathed, was able to provide officers with a photograph of the alleged assailant.

The search subsequently launched was extensive, encompassing multiple law enforcement agencies. Fremont PD coordinated efforts with East Bay Regional Park District PD, Union City PD, and Newark PD K9 units to set up a perimeter. Despite attempts to avoid capture, the suspect, David Becerra, 50, from Fremont, was located and arrested by officers with the assistance of a CHP Air Unit and Fremont PD drones. According to the Fremont Police Department, Becerra is not unfamiliar with the Alameda County legal system, having been previously arrested for a variety of violent offenses ranging from attempted murder to multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

The case against Becerra has swiftly been moved forward as details of the incident were presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. This has led to charges against Becerra under Penal Code 245(b) for assault with a semi-automatic firearm, Penal Code 246.3(a) for discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and Penal Code 29800(a)(1) for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
